The two tips here that I like are running Windows Update and Microsoft Security Essentials. Some people like the use the free Norton Internet Security Suite or McAfee that they get from Comcast. This is fine and better than not running anything at all, but these antivirus programs take up a lot of system resources and often cause more problems than they solve. Microsoft Security Essentials is really light weight and performs well on virus detection tests.
