http://lifehacker.com/5815138/why-you-shouldnt-use-a-debit-card-when-paying-for-a-hotel-or-rental-car
When you're asked for your credit card before renting a car or checking in at the hotel, they're not just taking an imprint. Travel expert Peter Greenberg points out that, more often than not, a hold is being placed on your available balance for the entire estimated bill. While this can be fine for credit cards, it's a bigger problem with debit.
I use a credit card for pretty much everything. It's also best to use a credit card when making online purchases. While it is generally pretty safe to buy stuff online, you're liability is more limited with a credit card than a debit card. If you need to dispute a charge with a credit card, you haven't lost any money yet. The same isn't true with a debit card.

Same here I use my credit card for almost everything I buy.
People ask the question... what's a RocknRolla? And I tell 'em - it's not about drums, drugs, and hospital drips, oh no. There's more there than that, my friend. We all like a bit of the good life - some the money, some the drugs, others the sex game, the glamour, or the fame. But a RocknRolla, oh, he's different. Why? Because a real RocknRolla wants the fucking lot.

I paid our hotels with my debit card to pay up front and I asked them to allow me to pay our incidentals through cash so they couldn't put a major hold on my debit card. I usually only use cash when I go on vacation because I dont want to overspend or have any crazy holds or fees that maybe hidden. When I am home I almost exclusively use my debit card though. I only use my credit card for emergencies now.

Paying incidentals with cash has the same drawbacks as using a debit card. Basically it ties up your cash and you have almost no recourse to get it back if things go wrong.
If you use a credit card for this stuff, often times the credit card company will do the arguing for you and you haven't lost any cash at that point. Ultimately, you still have to pay the credit card company if things to work out, but in my opinion, you have a better chance for a good outcome. You also get rewards for purchases on credit cards, which you don't get with cash and debit cards.
I guess it comes down to personal preference, but there are pros and cons to consider.

I go with Am Ex's cashback card at all times except where it's not taken ~ which is few and far between. When a place doesn't accept Am Ex, I go with the debit (Visa).
BTW ~ by using it everywhere, I get about $1,000 - $1,200 cashback per year. So do yourself a favor and get an Am Ex.
