I would like to get a dedicated server to start hosting these websites we are creating. There are several reasons to do this.

1. Dedicated servers are "always on", hence "Dedicated".
2. Down time would be minimized.
3. Performance would likely increase (due to the faster dedicated connection)

The problem lies in the cost. The cheapest dedicated server from 1and1.com is $109.99 / month. The way I think we could make this cost effective is if we get about 5 or 6 people or business who want a simple website hosted for $20 a month. They would have to pay for a year's worth of hosting (up front preferably). This would largely cover the cost of the dedicated server while giving us a whole server to use for whatever websites we want.

The types of websites we would be hosting would inevitably be low traffic, so there shouldn't be any worry there.

So I'm trying to use a little bit of crowd-sourcing here and asking you if you know of any business that would like to host a website for $20 a month. We would need to get at least 5 to get this thing off the ground to cover the cost. I also would not be "creating" the website for them, that is a different cost altogether. Let me know what you think.

i can cover the cost. 100 bucks between all of us for a year isn't anything.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough. $109.99 a month. So all of those would be monthly rates.

This maybe a stupid question, but how much would it be if we bought our own server?

Well, I already own my own server now, which is what my home computer is. That's where this website and all other (fantasy football website, snake draft app, etc) websites are hosted.

The point in "renting" a dedicated server from 1and1.com are the points I listed in the original post.
